How to change the PDP listening port

Solution

RDP Remote Desktop Protiocol is a really useful remote access tool, It allows you to use copy and paste, download and upload files. It also comes free and is easy to setup on every Windows machine. However there is a security risk which can be minimised.

The four things anyone needs to access a computer are:

  • The IP address of the computer you want to access
  • The port number (usually 3389)
  • The username (usually administrator)
  • The password

So it they know the location, the port and the username then the only protection you have is the passwordm there are other ways but this is normally the setup. If you can change the port and not use the Administrator account for RDP then you are more secure.

  1. Start the registry editor. (Type regedit in the Search box.)
  2. Navigate to the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp
  3. Find PortNumber
  4. Click Edit > Modify, and then click Decimal.
  5. Type the new port number, and then click OK.
  6. Close the registry editor, and restart your computer.
